نویسنده
چکیده
Helium was first isolated on Earth in 1895, by Sir William Ramsey. One hundred and one years later, it seems like a good time to review our current theoretical understanding of the helium atom. Helium has played an important role both in the development of quantum mechanics and in quantum field theory. The early history of helium is sketched. Various aspects of the modern theory are described in some detail, including (1) the computation of fine structure to order α2Ry and α3Ry, (2) the decay of metastable states, and (3) Rydberg states and long-range forces. A brief survey is made of some of the recent work on the quantum field theory of He and He-like ions. ∗Invited talk: “Quantum Systems: New Trends and Methods”, Minsk, June 3-7, 1996

The uncertainty relations and the underlying canonical commutation relations are at the heart of quantum mechanics. In recent years, for various conceptual and technical reasons, there has been renewed interest in the question whether there may exist corrections to the canonical commutation relations which could be significant at extreme scales. Let me start with a brief (and certainly incomple...

Certain higher dimensional operators of the lagrangian may render the vacuum inhomogeneous. A rather rich phase structure of the φ scalar model in four dimensions is presented by means of the mean-field approximation. One finds paraferroferriand antiferromagnetic phases and commensurateincom-mesurate transitions. There are several particles described by the same quantum field in a manner simila...

In this note we present a new numerical method for solving Lattice Quantum Field Theory. This Source Galerkin Method is fundamentally different in concept and application from Monte Carlo based methods which have been the primary mode of numerical solution in Quantum Field Theory. Source Galerkin is not probabilistic and treats fermions and bosons in an equivalent manner.

We discuss quantum–field–theoretic interpretation of the family of observables (the so–called C–algebra) introduced in [12] for a systematic description of multijet structure of multiparticle final states at high energies. We argue that from the point of view of general quantum field theory, all information about the multijet structure is contained in the values of a family of multiparticle qua...

The status of lattice calculations in Quantum Field Theory is reviewed. A major part is devoted to recent progress in formulating exact chiral symmetry on the lattice. Another topic which has received a lot of attention is the influence of dynamical quark effects. Attempts to quantify these effects for the light hadron spectrum and flavour singlet amplitudes are discussed, as well as other expe...
